A sanatorium at the foot of Moncayo, tackled with the uncompromising grit of the heavyweight champions of mystery. An investigation carried out in 2019, finally released for your viewing pleasure in 2020. We're back...

Agramonte. An intense investigation.

We headed down to the foothills of Moncayo to put one of northern Spain's most notorious locations to the test. We're always pretty sceptical about how easily the "cursed" label gets slapped onto any pile of old bricks, but this place had too many raffle tickets. Back in 2019 we rocked up with all our gear, ready to find out if there was anything left of the place besides crumbling walls.

The sanatorium stands in the province of Zaragoza, right near the edge of the Moncayo Natural Park. The ruins sit on an isolated patch of land where the wind howls and mobile signal vanishes before you even reach the turn-off. The sheer isolation gets your hackles up before you've even pulled out your first voice recorder.

A hotel that ended up as a hospital

The complex started out in the 1920s intended as a luxury hotel for wealthy tourists. The Spanish Civil War brought a screeching halt to that plan, and the site's purpose took a radical turn. It was converted into a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, taking advantage of the supposedly healthy mountain air.

That constant stream of the sick and medical staff carried on until it finally closed down for good in 1978. Since then, the building has suffered decades of total neglect, spray-paint graffiti, ripped-out door frames and visits from rubberneckers looking for a fright. What remains today is a skeleton of concrete and exposed brick with the roof caved in across several sections.

Noises and EVPs in the corridors

The local legends talk of weeping echoing down empty corridors and shadows darting across window frames. During our stint there with the recording gear, we picked up a few sharp thuds that didn't sound like the usual settling creaks of old timber. At least, that's what it felt like at the time.

Any damp old house creaks thanks to temperature shifts and the wind whistling through broken gaps. We like to think there's a physical explanation before rushing off to call a priest or a medium. Even so, hearing noises in the dead of night inside a place like this really makes your stomach drop.

Watch your step

Beyond ghosts and EVPs, the real hazard at Agramonte is the structure itself. The flooring is rotten, the staircases lack handrails, and there are uncovered drop-offs lurking outside. Exploring the interior has handed out more than a few genuine scares in the shape of twisted ankles and cuts from rusty rebar.

If you happen to be passing through the area, the best bet is to check out the perimeter from the outside and let the roofs collapse in peace without risking your neck. The stories will still be there even if the building ends up tumbling down completely.

Would you brave a structurally unsafe building at night just to record a couple of EVPs?
